Ilya Volykhine started painting in 1995. “I paint from my memory and imagination, everyday images of people in a whimsical world of farce”. Ilya makes people immortal by putting them in his paintings and finds expression easier with a brush in hand than his own language. “I’m interested in moving between flat fields of colour/space and defined detailed sections (areas of interest). This shifting idea allows my paintings to fall in and out of perspective and allows me to experiment with both highly controlled and loose mark-making.”
In 2014 his work was selected for the New Zealand Painting & Printmaking Award exhibition and he was a Finalist in the Walker & Hall Art Award. Ilya has been recognised in Australia since 2001 whilst participating in numerous solo and group exhibitions there.
