Lauren Kitts has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of California 1985. She has been living and working in New Zealand full time as a sculptor since then. She has attended over 30 sculpture symposia nationally and internationally, and has won multiple awards for her sculptures in New Zealand.
As a stone sculptor, certain influences, such as truth to materials, inform her work. Instead of using imagery imposed upon a material, she works with the type and shape of a piece of stone in a conversational manner to portray an idea or concept. Quite often the initial shape and texture of the stone will inform this dialogue.
